's political bias if whining about the liberal media was a winning strategy for republicans newt gingrich would be the nominee. hugo, i will call your attention -- >> liberal media. >> new york times hugo lingren, this i think is really -- i like this because it references stink bombs also. the ap quoting michael mcdonald of george mason university which tracks early voting saying if you wait until the election prior to the election to release your stink bomb you've lost coloradans. if you've got the game changer you have to do that soon. >> i agree with that. look, the romney campaign if they could buy time they would be buying it. i don't know what they want to make the most of this last push. it's hard to see -- i mean i think the debates will be interesting for the exact matter that something unexpected has to happen to really change the race for romney. it's hard to imagine -- it's hard to imagine obama going in there and doing a terrible job. it's possible. sort of equally impossible to imagine romney doing such an outstanding job, so different than we've ever expected that would also mak

point. take a look at this little change with newt gingrich in florida in january. >> speaker gingrich was hired by freddie mac to promote them, to influence other people throughout washington, encouraging them not to dismantle these two entities. i think that was an enormous mistake. >> so he did it with a nice tone, said newt gingrich made an enormous mistake. i think that was a good way of romney pointing out the differences. what he does, though, is when he's in moment when there's a really candid exchange and he's not sure what to say, he can really look awkward. remember this? i bet you do. >> you were for individual mandate, my friend. >> you know what, you've raised that before, rick. and you're wrong -- >> it was true then, true now. >> rick, i'll tell you what, 10,000 bucks? $10,000 bet? >> that became a real problem for mitt romney because it only fed into the narrative that he doesn't care about your problems, he's rich and out of touch. if you bet $10,000, not such a good idea. >> that was a little awkward. >> it was a bad moment for him. and that happens to him when he's

gingrich, other conservatives rallying around akin and calling on washington leaders to put money into that race. they still think it's winnable. in an interview with us, akin said, listen, my eyes have been opened. i now see how many people don't understand conservatism. he's talking about mitch mcconnell who runs the republican conference. and he was talking about myitt romney and karl rove and all the other people who distanced himself from him over his comments. does the republican senator ideal committee start to put money back into the race? they promised not to. we heard they're rethinking that decision, because they have to win it or they're not going to win a clear majority in the senate. >> boy, john heilemann, that puts him in a difficult position. by the way, akin saying that there's some people in washington that don't understand conservatism. i don't think that's the case. i think, again, and i quote nicole wallace who says, you know, people are debating about whether we'll be the conservative party, the moderate party, i'm just tired of us being the stupid party. yo

campaign that happened last year during which you have mitt romney, new gingrich and rick santorum agree enthusiastically we need immigration reform to attract more high skilled immigrants and they kept asking what about the border? literally they were having a little conversation about the bill, and then it was completely ignored because that doesn't sound like a border of sense to me. then mitt romney gave a speech about immigration reform that was oriented of facilitating the family unification and also for skilled visas etc. this is a marginal issue yet interestingly in the most recent years that we have data, you have more immigration, more skilled immigration than less skilled and also more presentation from asia than latin america. that doesn't mean any kind of change and it doesn't mean that mitt romney isn't doing well with the voters, yet it is also true that the immigration the date is framed in some ways and framed and others, it's important to keep in mind particularly as the composition of the population changes. i guess i see these questions are differently in that i see t

? >> that is the third option, and that is to criticize the question as newt gingrich did very effectively in the republican primaries when asked about marital problems. >> it could have said i would kill the son of a -- [laughter] >> one of the purposes of the debate was to actually try to learn something about the candidate you do not already know. what we argue about him is vacation reading included swedish land use planning. i agree absolutely with sandy. i would have wanted to kill him, but we are a nation of laws. he apparently had a brother that was killed in an automotive accident and another relative who was mugged. as of was that question was and of prepared as he was, that is the nature of the presidency. things will happen for which you are not prepared, and i thought it may have been an unfair glimpse, but it was also telling, and i defend the question. >> what does the canada do when a question like that is posed the comes out of left field? it does reach to sometimes the heart of your character or personality? >> i think he did the right thing. there was no pause. there was

of romney, he has been, at times strong. when he went toe to toe with newt gingrich in florida in a debate, that was a very strong performance but he stumbles with the 47%. and republicans just don't think that he can be consistent over this month plus. >> bill: so it leaves up to -- well, the debates. right? now, i want to get your take on this. to point out that this idea that the debate is going to turn things around, that's the same thing they said about his choice of a vice presidential running mate right. that was going to catapult him into the lead. then they said wait until tampa. the republican -- catapult him. now they're saying wait until next wednesday's debate. >> i think it is going to be tough. ryan helped him a little bit in the beginning. conservatives rallied around it. there has been a disappointment there hasn't been a bold choice. this is tough for romney. romney needs to go deep now. he's down. it is fourth quarter. he's down. but then if you start attacking relentlessly, then you look de
